Glass

We source a wide range of glass types from several suppliers. Glass units are quality checked upon delivery to us to ensure that all units are of the highest quality and free from imperfections. A summary of glass options and spacer bar types are listed below but we can accommodate most glass types that are commercially available such as switchable privacy and bullet proof glass.

If you have a particular preference please specify when requesting a quotation.

Glass Types

Clear
Sometimes referred to as “float” glass, annealed glass is sometimes used if the glass size is too small to be toughened i.e. Pilkington Optifloat & OptiWhite (low iron-extra clear, higher clarity float)
Toughened
Standard option in all our double glazed units. Up to five times stronger than annealed glass.
Low E
Low Emissivity Glass. Optimises solar heat gain, thermal insulation and light transmission to provide a higher window energy rating (WER). i.e. Pilkington Optitherm S3 & S1 (S1 higher spec with 1.0 U value).
Solar Control
Uses a Solar Control coating to keep internal temperatures cool whilst still maintaining excellent light transmittance. i.e. Pilkington Activ Range, Pilkington Eclipse, System 3 Sunguard.
Easy Clean
A dual-action coating which through sunlight breaks down organic dirt which is then allowed to be washed away with the rain. i.e. Pilkington Activ Range (Activ Clear has no Solar control).
Solar Control Easy Clean
This is a common specification of outer pane of a D/G roof unit. It combines self-cleaning properties as described with solar control. i.e. Pilkington Activ Range.
Solar Control / Low E
Another combination which offers Solar Control properties with Low E thermal insulation benefits in dual coating on a single pane. This can be combined with another Low E inner pane for even higher insulating ratings. i.e. System 3 Sunguard, Pilkington Eclipse.

Pilkington offer a high spec option combining Self-Cleaning, Solar Control & a level of Low E in a single pane, ideally aimed at single pane applications. i.e. Pilkington Activ Suncool – Blue.
Laminated
Laminated Glass is designed to provide both impact resistance and security. It may break on impact but the adjoining glass is held in place by inter layer of PVB, thus preventing injury or intrusion, it is however more susceptible to breakage.

Combinations of the glass incorporated into the laminate, can be optimised for specific applications; Safety, Security, Acoustic, Solar Control, Privacy & Decoration. i.e. Pilkington Optilam.
Fire Rated
Fire retardant glass can be supplied to various standards. These are dependant on the application, risk level, structural integrity and protection time required. Specification needs to be appropriate, to select the correct product. (Note: Fire retardant glass cannot be leaded but can be furnished with metal B2B spacers & normal bonded bars) i.e. Pilkington Pyroclear, Pyrodur, Pyroshield, Pyrostop & System 3 Pyroguard.
Decorative Glass
Glazed units can be decorated by either patterned designs on the glass, textured effects in the glass itself or by the addition of Georgian or cottage style bars, coloured glass, leaded lights & bevels. i.e. Pilkington Textured, Oriel, Opal & Decorative ranges.
Curved Glass
A specialised glass bending process is used to form a curve. We use specialist suppliers for these type of units. We have provided quotations for curved fanlights and produced a number of curved glass  domes. Currently we offer two sizes and two specifications; a standard spec using toughened inner & outer panes or one with a laminated inner pane, optional extras such as solar control & self-cleaning properties can be applied. The intention is to widen the range we offer to perhaps four set dome sizes. Lead times for these curved glass domes is typically up to eight weeks.
Slim Line Units
A slim D/G unit which comes with low E coating internally, warm edge spacer & Krypton gas as standard. Designed with a minimum spacer cavity and sightline seal, so to appear like a single pane window. Aimed for use in Listed buildings but with U values that comply to English & Scottish building regulations for D/G units. Can be leaded but with a minimum 4mm cavity.
Triple Glazing
Triple glazed roof & wall glass units are growing in popularity though double glazed units with optimum glass, spacers & gas infills which can come close to, or match, the triple glazed insulating properties. For triple glazed roof units, Pilkington stipulate minimum 10mm cavities. Lead-times for triple glazed units is four weeks & the cost is usually 50% more.
This diagram shows a typical double-glazed unit surface and coating layout.

Spacer Bars

Standard Spacer
A Standard Spacer bar is usually made from an aluminium extrusion and cut to the required length. It is a hollow construction which is filled with a desiccant which is designed to absorb any moisture and reduce the risk of inner panel condensation. Aluminium is an efficient conductor of heat or cold and therefore results in high levels of thermal loss and a reduction of energy efficiency.

Swiss Warm Edge Spacer
Swiss Warm Edge spacer is fabricated from an insulating plastic composite material, that is a far more efficient barrier to heat loss than aluminium. It keeps the edge of the sealed unit warm, hence the name ‘warm edge’. Double glazed sealed units fabricated using a warm edge spacer bar can achieve up to 65% warmer internal edge temperature, with a reduced risk of condensation and increased thermal efficiency. Slimlite units are produced with Warm Edge Spacer as standard. The warm edge spacer is used around the perimeter of the glass unit and combined with an aluminium spacer within the cavity if fenestration is required.

Super Spacer
Is a no-metal, pre-desiccated, structural foam spacer system. It is considered the ultimate in high performance thermal efficient spacer systems. Super Spacer has 100% flexible memory & allows for expansion and contraction.
Steel Spacer
Steel is used specifically for fire retardant glass for which it is mandatory.
